Several Toyota engines have been known to burn oil, particularly those produced in the late 2000s to early 2010s. Notably:
2AZ-FE Engine: This 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, used in various models like the Camry, RAV4, Scion tC, and others, is infamous for excessive oil consumption issues. Toyota acknowledged this issue and offered some remedies, including piston and piston ring replacements.
1ZZ-FE Engine: This 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, found in models like the Corolla, Matrix, and Celica, has also faced complaints about high oil consumption, especially in the earlier 2000s models.
2GR-FE Engine: This 3.5-liter V6 engine, used in models like the Camry, Avalon, Highlander, and others, has had reports of oil consumption, though it is less commonly reported compared to the 2AZ-FE and 1ZZ-FE.
Toyota has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and extended warranties for some of these issues. If you own a Toyota with one of these engines and are experiencing excessive oil consumption, it may be worth checking if any TSBs or recalls apply to your vehicle.
