ParticipantTOYOTA COROLLA PERFORMANCE OPTIONS
The Toyota Corolla gives you access to a wide range of performance options. You can select
from three motors, one of which is a hybrid. You can also choose from four transmissions.
Plus, once you’re in the car, you can pick different drive modes!
Toyota Corolla Engine Options and Available Power
The Corolla checks in under 3,000 pounds of curb weight in some configurations,
meaning the horsepower-per-pound ratio of the car is strong.
The standard engine is a 1.8L that generates 139 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque.
If you want to step up to something larger, the 2.0L 4-cylinder is the way to go, making
169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. This 2.0L engine also allows you to swap between
Normal and Sport driving modes. The modes will alter steering weight, gear changes,
and other driving dynamics to create the exact performance you want.
Finally, there’s the 1.8L 4-cylinder hybrid, which sports Normal, Power, and Eco driving modes
while delivering 121 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque.Fuel Economy and Transmission Options
Efficiency is a calling card of the 2021 Toyota Corolla. Depending on the trim you select,
the car is going to register as either an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle or a Super Ultra Low
Emission Vehicle.
The peak for efficiency unsurprisingly comes from the hybrid engine, which can deliver
an EPA-estimated return of 53 city MPG/ 52 highway MPG.1
Front-wheel drive is the only powertrain the car provides. With it, the 1.8L 4-cylinder engine
returns an EPA-estimated 30 city MPG/ 8 highway MPG.1 Finally there’s the 2.0L 4-cylinder,
whose efficiency varies depending on the transmission you choose:
• 2.0L with manual transmission returns EPA-estimated
29 city MPG/ 36 highway MPG1
• 2.0L with dynamic-shift continuously variable transmission returns
31 city MPG/38 highway MPG1
The 6-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) is a good choice for those who prefer
an interactive experience behind the wheel. The three other options are a Continuously
Variable Transmission (CVT), a Dynamic-Shift Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT),
and an Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT).MAKING ROOM FOR GUESTS AND THEIR BELONGINGS IN
THE 2021 COROLLAWhile compact, the Toyota Corolla still carves out interior space. The 2021 model provides
generous passenger dimensions in the first and second rows while also providing access to
a large trunk.
Let’s start with headroom, which is a vital statistic in a compact car. For front passengers,
headroom measures 38.3 inches while those in the rear seats will receive 37.1 inches.
And if you have all five possible passengers seated in the Corolla, those up front will have
42 inches of legroom to stretch out in, with those in the rear making use of 34.8 inches.
Other key passenger measurements include:
• 54 inches of front shoulder room
• 51.7 inches of rear shoulder room
• 53.9 inches of front hip room
• 51.3 inches of rear hip room
• 88.6 cubic feet of total passenger volume
And when you’re grocery shopping or packing luggage into the Corolla for a weekend trip,
the car offers a trunk with as much as 13.1 cubic feet of cargo space!SAFETY IS ALWAYS A PRIORITY AT TOYOTA
If you’ve driven a previous Corolla or really any other model within the Toyota lineup before,
you’re likely familiar with the brand’s devotion to safety. Now in 2021, much of that safety
comes from driver-assistance technologies in addition to extensive airbag systems.
The core driving-assistance features of the Corolla come in the Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0
package. This package is standard with the base trim and features Pre-Collision Assist with
Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams,
Road Sign Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, and a Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system.
That’s a lot to digest, so we’ll breakdown each feature specifically.
Pre-Collison System with Pedestrian Detection
This technology is always on the lookout for obstacles or obstructions in the path of your
Toyota Corolla, such as other vehicles or people. If a collision seems likely, the system works
to diminish the impact of the collision while providing you with a warning to hit the brakes.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
Sometimes when driving, you may unknowingly begin to slip out of your lane. If this happens,
Lane Departure Alert will remind you to move back into place. Also, Steering Assist will
gently ease the wheel in the direction needed to get you back into the proper lane.
Auto High-Beams
Your Toyota Corolla is always working to understand
changing road conditions while keeping you alerted
to these changes. At night, the high beams of the car
can turn on automatically when needed, such as those
moments when you’re driving alone on a rural road.
Road Sign Assist
With Road Sign Assist, prominent traffic sign information will be given to you as you drive,
such as changing speed limits. The information shows on the Multi-Information Display.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
In addition to performing functions of typical cruise control setups, the Dynamic Radar
Cruise Control will actually monitor how far you are from the vehicle in front of you. If you’re
following at an appropriate distance, the car will maintain that distance by accelerating
and decelerating automatically.
Additional Safety Features
The safety features in the 2021 Toyota Corolla continue to deliver. A few other prominent
systems working to keep you safe include Vehicle Stability Control, Vehicle Dynamics
Integrated Management, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brake System, Electronic Brake-force
Distribution, Brake Assist, and Smart Stop Technology®.IN-CABIN TECHNOLOGY
Modern cars have to be jam-packed with infotainment technology, an area where the
2021 Toyota Corolla really thrives. Whether you jump up to the most advanced suite of
infotainment at the top trim level or stick with the standard version, your Corolla is going
to offer intuitive and accommodating tech.
Sticking with the standard model gives you access to a 7-inch touchscreen display, an audio
system touting six speakers, plus the handy addition of Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.
These two integration systems are meant to sync with your smartphone. Essentially, they link
the phone to the touchscreen in your car, giving you the ability to access phone applications
on that screen, like music, navigation, and more.
Thanks to another standard feature, Bluetooth® wireless technology, you’ll never have
to remove your hands from the wheel to pull up a podcast or get directions to a restaurant.
If you want to go all out for infotainment, the top trims of the Corolla offer an 8-inch
touchscreen display, a nine-speaker JBL® sound system with a subwoofer, plus Amazon
Alexa compatibility. If you use Amazon Alexa in your home, you can pair that system to
the Amazon Alexa feature in your Corolla!
2021 TOYOTA COROLLA TRIM LEVELSIt’s common to see a Toyota Corolla driving down the street, but each one still looks unique
thanks to the many trim levels available. The 2021 model alone has nine variations, and
that’s to say nothing of the numerous packages and accessories you can equip the car with.
The base trim is the L, an option that comes with all the standard features we’ve discussed,
plus LED headlights, LED accent lights, and a Black front grille with sport mesh insert.
From there, the LE sports an automatic climate control system; the Hybrid LE, which
introduces the hybrid powertrain; and the SE, which is the first to offer the 6-speed
manual transmission.
You can have your car blacked out by choosing the next trim, the SE Nightshade Edition,
touting black exterior accents along the mirror caps, door handles, and roof-mounted
shark-fin antenna.
The remaining trim levels for the 2021 Toyota Corolla include:
• SE Apex Edition
• XLE
• XSE
